FAQs

Overnight fasting means not eating or drinking anything, except water, for 10-12 hours before a blood test.

Earlier, overnight fasting was mandatory following the research at that time. However, now with the advancement of clinical research, we can test for blood sugar, cholesterol and do the abdominal ultrasound without the need to fast overnight. The results of the test do not change significantly by food intake, provided a heavy and fatty breakfast is avoided.

The non-overnight fasting protocol is based on current research that shows that recent food intake does not affect the accuracy of the test.

a. Lipid profile: Tests for cholesterol

b. Diabetes screening: HbA1C is now the primary test for diabetes screening. Random blood sugar test is done along with this. If you have been recommended fasting and postprandial blood tests or prefer to do these, then please report following 10-12 hours of overnight fasting.

C. Ultrasound abdomen: The scan is done following a gap of 4 hours after your last meal.
