Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (Lavh)

What is Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy?

Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) is a surgical procedure that removes the uterus and ovaries from the body using a laparoscope.

In most cases, a simple laparoscopic hysterectomy is sufficient. However, an abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy may be necessary in some cases. The best course of action for each patient depends on their medical condition, medical history, and current health status.

When do surgeons recommend LAVH?

A laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy is advised, when there are cases of fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, or a probable expansion of any tissue in the uterus lining

How is the LAVH procedure carried out?

This procedure is performed in a specialized operating room with the patient under general anesthesia. The surgeon first makes an incision near the belly button, then inserts a laparoscope through the incision and inflates the body with carbon dioxide to make all of the organs visible. Small metal tubes, trocars, and other microsurgery equipment are utilized to execute this procedure through incisions created on the belly. A camera mounted on the top captures images of the body and displays them on the monitor screen.

The fallopian tubes, ovaries, and other pelvic tissues are then detached from the uterus. They are separated from the ligaments and their blood supply is cut off. The specimen is returned through an incision, and when all of these have been extracted, they are stitched back together with stitches.

What are the benefits of LAVH?

This surgery is highly recommended due to some of the following benefits:

  1. The incisions made in this procedure are small.
  2. When compared to other procedures, such as abdominal hysterectomy or vaginal hysterectomy, the scars, pain, and recovery time are all significantly reduced.
  3. Women who have never had a child are permitted to get a vaginal hysterectomy.
  4. When all of the indications and the surgery are considered together, it is clear that laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy is the simplest option. This is due to the carbon dioxide in the body inflating it. The organs are viewable on screen, making the procedure easier.
  5. One of the best things about a laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy is that it eliminates the need for C-section.

What are the possible risks during the LAVH procedure?

The possible risk factors that can happen during this procedure are

  • Bleeding
  • Blood clot in the lungs and legs
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Incisions leading to infections
  • Scar tissue
  • Hernia

What can you expect during post-surgical care for LAVH?

LAVH offers quick post-operative recovery time that ranges from a few hours to a day or two, depending on the type of surgery administered. In addition, many patients resume work and other normal activities in one or two weeks' time.

Here are a few precautions that has to followed after a laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy is done. They are:

  • Avoid lifting heavy objects and performing strenuous activity for at least a week.
  • Do not drive or engage in any excessive motions.
  • Use pads instead of tampons
  • Use laxatives and stool softeners if you have constipation

The most important thing to remember is to not be stressed. Perform chores only if you are entirely at ease with them. The same can be stated for your normal daily activities.
